The love potion works, but everyone awakes and
falls madly in love with the wrong partner -- the first person s/he
sees! To seal their love forever, Alexis demands that Aline drink
the potion, too. He is angry when she refuses. The Vicar is
lonely since everyone is engaged but he. Enter Aline, who
drank the potion after all, and she falls for the Vicar. Alexis
discovers them together and he spurns her. Meanwhile, Lady
Sangazure falls in love with J. Wellington Wells. "Oh, horrible!
-- she's going to adore me!" he cries. According to Wells, the
only solution to this confusion is "Or he (Alexis) or I must die!"
You can imagine the complicated Gilbert & Sullivan conclusion....
